President Biden returned to Delaware on Friday evening — just 17 days after tearfully saying goodbye as he moved to the White House.
Biden’s weekend trip will be spent at his family home in Wilmington, where he remained through much of the 2020 campaign as a COVID-19 precaution.
When Biden left his home state on Jan. 19, he grew emotional, saying, “When I die, Delaware will be written on my heart.”
Biden departed the White House Friday without taking reporter questions on the lawn or at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Asked about the trip, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that Biden was going back home so soon because “he is from Delaware and has a home there and is going to spend the weekend with his wife and family there.”
A journalist pointed out that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking to discourage travel, including via airplane.
“Well, the key … is ensuring that people don’t take steps to make others vulnerable in our effort to get the pandemic under control,” Psaki said.

“As you know, any president of the United States — Democrat or Republican — obviously takes Air Force One, a private plane, when they travel. Delaware is his home and so he looks forward to spending the weekend there and some time with his family.”
Biden, 78, received his second of two COVID-19 vaccine doses last month. Many White House aides in close contact with him also have been vaccinated.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has decreed that people traveling to DC from Delaware must self-quarantine for 14 days, but the rule isn’t enforced.
Former President Donald Trump frequently took weekend trips to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., or to his golf club in Bedminster, NJ. When he remained in DC, Trump frequently took Saturday and Sunday trips to his golf course in Virginia.
