What are Egyptian pyramids?
Egyptian pyramids are pyramid-shaped structures found in Egypt. It is thought that there are 118-138 pyramids in Egypt so far. Most of these pyramids were built as tombs for Egyptian pharaohs.
The oldest known Egyptian pyramids are located in Saqqara, in the Memphis region of Egypt. The oldest of these is the Zoser Pyramid (Stepped Pyramid). It was built in 2611-2630 in the name of King Zoser.
Imhotep is the architect of the Zoser Pyramid and the complex around it, and these structures are considered to be the oldest historical structures representing Masonic work in the world.
Among the Egyptian pyramids, the best known and most popular ones are the Pyramids of Cheops, Kefren and Mikerinos in Giza on the outskirts of Cairo. Some of these pyramids are also known as the largest structures ever built on earth. One of the pyramids of Giza, the Pyramid of Kefren is the largest Egyptian pyramid and is still the only artifact that preserves its integrity among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
There is a belief that the shape of the Egyptian pyramids resembles the Benben stone, which the Egyptians thought was created from the world itself.
There are also those who think that the pyramids were built to resurrect the pharaohs after death.
When were the Egyptian pyramids built?
In ancient times, the Egyptian kings were buried in small hills called “mastaba”. Approximately BC. Around 2780, the first Egyptian pyramid, the Pyramid of Zoser, was built as a mausoleum in the name of King Zoser. This pyramid is located in the area of Memphis and contains the tomb of King Zoser, it is a stepped pyramid and its other name is the Step Pyramid. Pyramid period is about BC. It ended around 2150, but smaller pyramids continued to be built for about a thousand years.
How were the Egyptian pyramids made?
Many tons of rocks were used during the construction of the Egyptian pyramids. It is thought that these huge rocks from the quarry were carried by wooden sleds over the sand by wetting the sled. It is thought that these water drops act as a bridge between the sand grains and allow them to adhere to each other.
Many skilled and experienced stonemasons worked in the construction of the pyramids and these are salaried workers.
However, there are many different theories about how the Egyptian pyramids were built. Another of these is that the rock blocks weighing tons were transported over the Nile. However, exactly how it was built has not been determined clearly, it still remains a mystery.
Features of the Egyptian pyramids
The most famous of the Egyptian pyramids are the Giza pyramids, and many of us only know these three pyramids found in Giza: Cheops , Kefren and Mikerinos. The pyramids of Giza are intended to stand forever and they were designed in this way. As a matter of fact, the pyramids have been standing still for thousands of years.
The construction of these mausoleums, built in the Old Kingdom period in Egypt, dates back to about 4500 years ago. It was believed that the Egyptian pharaohs would turn into gods in the afterlife after death. For this, temples were erected for the gods in order to prepare the pharaoh for the other world, and huge pyramids were built for the pharaohs. These pyramids contain everything that the pharaoh could need in the next world.

It is estimated that approximately 2.3 million stone blocks were used in its construction and the weight of each varied between 2.5-15 tons.

In the mausoleum of Khafre, there is also a huge statue made of limestone called the Sphinx, whose body is depicted as the head of the pharaoh and the lion’s head. The Sphinx is thought to be guarding the tomb of Pharaoh Khafre.
The third and last Pyramid of Giza is the smallest of the first two. This pyramid built in the name of Pharaoh Mikerinos BC. It was erected around 2490 and is a more complex monumental tomb.
Each of these gigantic pyramids is actually a part of a large complex, in which there is a temple, palace, sun boats and some different structures. These structures include the small pyramids that are the tombs of the pharaohs’ wives and servants.
