Netflix’s new drama Firefly Lane follows two best friends all the way from the moment they met in the 1970s to their riotous youth in the ’80s to the reflective early ’00s. Three decades of friendship for Firefly Lane‘s Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) means three decades of insane drama. However nothing is as dramatic in Firefly Lane Season 1 than its conclusion. We finally learn who is at the 2005 funeral, but we’re left wondering if yet another major Firefly Lane character has died…

Netflix’s Firefly Lane is based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah. While the show, like the book, follows the friendship of boisterous Tully Hart and shy Kate Mularkey, the Netflix series takes some liberties with the story’s ending. One character is spared, another put in grave danger, and we’re left wondering if Tully and Kate’s friendship can really survive anything thrown their way.

Because Firefly Lane the series moves in a non-linear fashion, skipping between the ’70s, ’80s, and ’00s, it can be tricky to figure out exactly what happens when.

In fact, although Kate and Marah’s conversations suggest that she’s gone, Tully actually shows up to pay her respects for the person who has actually passed…Kate’s dad.

Fans of the Kristin Hannah novels Firefly Lane and its sequel Fly Away will note that the show makes at least one major departure here. In the books, Kate dies. Yup, Kate dies and the Firefly Lane sequel is about Tully raising Kate’s teen daughter.

However, Firefly Lane Season 1 does leave one major character’s fate up in the air…

When we last see Johnny Ryan, he and Kate have rekindled their relationship after officially signing their divorce papers in 2003. He has gone to Iraq in pursuit of his dream of being a foreign war correspondent. Everything seems fine, but we later see a landmine go off and Johnny’s unconscious body laying near by.

Johnny does not appear in the flash forward funeral scenes, so we want to know…is he okay?

Decider tried to get some news from Firefly Lane star Ben Lawson, but the Aussie actor wanted to say mum on his character’s fate.

“You’re asking me to give Season 2 spoilers!?! People haven’t even seen Season 1 yet!” Lawson said.

“Look…um…I…(laughs), I don’t know how to answer this question,” Lawson said.

Whether that’s only in ’80s (or ’90s?!?) flashbacks…we’ll have to wait to find out…

Forget who lives or dies, the real question you might be asking yourself as the Firefly Lane Season 1 Episode 10 credits roll is “WHAT DID TULLY DO TO KATE?!?!

As we mentioned earlier, the bulk of Firefly Lane Season 1’s flash forward scenes seem to suggest that Tully is essentially dead to Kate. After an awkward encounter in front of the church where Kate’s father’s funeral mass is being held, Tully tries to talk to Kate. However Kate makes it clear that Tully is not welcome. All we know is Tully did something so bad even Kate can’t forgive her.

So what did Tully do? Well, maybe she slept with (a totally okay) Johnny, but she already did that in the ’80s.

Could she have murdered someone?!?

We don’t know! And we’re guessing that if Netflix renews Firefly Lane that Season 2 will deal with Tully’s big betrayal.
