Mr Shipper, who survived Auschwitz-Birkenau before being despatched to Stutthof, used to be raised by his father and grandmother in Łódź, Poland, after his oldsters divorced, having been informed his mom had died.

In 1939 his father escaped to the Soviet Union, believing that it was best younger Jewish males who had been in peril, and he never saw him once more. 

After the warfare, Mr Shipper were given a letter from England written through a Polish lady who was once looking for a son and had discovered his name on a British Crimson Cross List, asking to test if he had a scar on his left wrist. 

He did and later travelled to England to be reunited together with his mother, whom he slightly knew.
