Four people were killed in a high-speed chase in North Carolina that ended with a vehicle submerged in a pond, authorities said.

The chase began when a trooper tried to pull over a Ford vehicle for speeding on Highway 24 in Duplin County around 10 p.m. Monday, news station WITN reported.

The driver led the trooper onto Highway 11 before running through a stop sign.

The vehicle then sped off the road, hit a fence and traveled into a pond, where it landed upside down and was quickly submerged. the outlet reported.

An officer was able to rescue rope to save one person who was in the vehicle, authorities said.

Rescue crews pulled the vehicle from the water and discovered four bodies inside.

Police have not released the identities of the victims.

State highway patrol has launched an investigation into the deadly incident.
