For the Golden Globes, the show must go on — COVID-19 or not. This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be announcing the nominees for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, the first major show of awards season. Due to the pandemic, the 78th Golden Globe Awards have been pushed back a few weeks, but film and TV buffs can still expect to see a show jam-packed with buzzy moments when it comes time for Hollywood’s most enjoyable night.
But before we get to the real show, we have to make it through the nominations. This year, there are a few locks on the television side, most notably Schitt’s Creek, which cleaned up at the Emmy Awards in September 2020. Other sure-thing nominees include The Crown (Olivia Colman will have a chance to win back-to-back awards for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II), Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso, and Ozark, a perennial nominee. Could this be the year that the Netflix drama nabs the top spot?
When it comes to the film side, things get a little trickier. Many high-profile films slated to debut in 2020 were delayed due to the pandemic, which leaves the HFPA with a smaller pool of applicants to evaluate. However, there were a few standout films released over the past few months, including Nomadland, Mank, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Given the shifting nature of the cinema landscape, streaming will most likely reign supreme at the 2021 Golden Globes, with Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and even Disney+ (thanks to Hamilton) vying for top awards.
The 78th Golden Globes, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, will air Sunday, February 28 on NBC.
