The Los Angeles Rams shocked the NFL world by making the first blockbuster trade of the offseason on Saturday – but not before they tried to make an even bigger splash.

Before the Rams landed on Matthew Stafford, the team made a run at Aaron Rodgers, according to the Los Angeles Times. It was only after the Packers informed the team that Rodgers wasn’t available that they struck a deal to land the other NFC North quarterback.

There was speculation that the Packers may move on from Rodgers in the offseason after they traded up to draft quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft. That speculation reached a fever pitch after Rodgers offered cryptic comments following the Packers’ NFC Championship game loss to the Buccaneers.

“There are a lot of guys’ futures that are uncertain — myself included,” Rodgers said.

However, Rodgers quieted many of those concerns after appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show.” And after the Packers rebuffed the Rams, it appears a near-certainty that Rodgers will return to Green Bay in 2021.

The Rams sent two future first-round picks, a third-round pick and former starting QB Jared Goff to the Lions for Stafford. It was reported that several other teams were hot on LA’s trail to acquire the star quarterback, but Los Angeles was able to offer two first-rounders, though Detroit is now stuck with the mammoth contract Goff signed before the 2019 season.
