What better way to celebrate Groundhog day this year than with the classic 1993 rom-com, Groundhog Day? Sure, all year has felt like a time loop, but might as well keep tradition and turn to Bill Murray‘s hit film. If you still haven’t seen it, Groundhog Day follows a weatherman named Phil (Murray) who is stuck living the same day over and over again in Punxsutawney, where he’s gone to film a segment on Groundhog Day.

The witty, wise comedy was recognized with multiple award nominations after it was released, and has gone on to become a favorite over the years. Plus, it firmly cemented Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” in our heads on repeat.

If all of this Groundhog Day talk has got you wondering where the hit movie takes place, we’ve got you covered. Where did they film Groundhog Day? Here’s everything you need to know about where the Groundhog Day movie was filmed.

GROUNDHOG DAY FILMING LOCATIONS: WHERE WAS GROUNDHOG DAY FILMED?

Although Groundhog Day takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, they didn’t film the movie there. Instead, production took place mostly in Woodstock, Illinois, according to Penn Live. There’s even a plaque on the sidewalk right outside of 108 Cass Street, where Phil keeps stepping into a puddle. “Bill Murray stepped here,” the plaque reads. Since the movie came out over 20 years ago, Woodstock has fully embraced Groundhog Day, celebrating the yearly tradition with walking tours from the movie’s filming locations and predictions from their very own groundhog, Woodstock Willie.

BILL MURRAY GROUNDHOG DAY: WHO ELSE STARS IN GROUNDHOG DAY?

Bill Murray is the name most synonymous with Groundhog Day, but the comedian shares the screen with his character’s love interest, Rita Hanson, played by Andie MacDowell. Groundhog Day also stars Chris Elliott as Larry the cameraman, Stephen Tobolowsky as Ned Ryerson, Brian Doyle-Murray as Buster Green, Marita Geraghty as Nancy Taylor, Angela Paton as Mrs. Lancaster, Rick Ducommun as Gus, Rick Overton as Ralph, and Robin Duke as Doris the waitress.
